Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions that I have received. I'm sharing them in hopes that this will help others out there too.

Q1:I am very much a beginner crocheter, but wanted to try your skater beanie. I'm unclear on the reference: " ... as an alternate to chaining xx sc". Can you clarify? Thanks!

A1:I assume that your question is referring to the live chain. Basically, when a pattern worked in a round calls for starting as "chain 2, and sc 7 times in 2nd ch from hook", you can just do the live chain instead. The "7" is an example of xx. It can be any number (whatever that the pattern calls for), I just picked 7 arbitrarily above for this example. Hope this helps.

Q2:Do you have a pattern similar to this but with a brim??

A2:Sorry, I don't have a pattern with a brim.

Q3:In your pattern you refer to xx Sc in 2nd ch from hook. Or 80 sts + xx. What does the xx stand for?

A3:The xx just refers to x number of stitches (in case you needed to increase in earlier rounds for a larger hat size). If you are following the standard hat size, you can ignore the xx.

Q4:I am a beginner at crocheting and am trying to make some hats for my boys. I am trying to follow your skater hat pattern. I used the adjustable ring method which tells you to chain 3 and double crochet, then started with step 2 on your pattern. My hat seems to be curling quite a bit like a doily! When you get to the end of each round, do you chain at all before starting the next one? Or is it a continuous row? I hope that makes sense. Any guidance that you can give me would be great!

A4:It is worked in a continuous spiral. No need to chain after each round. Use a stitch marker to help you keep track of your rounds. Also, you shouldn't be chaining anything to start with, and ALL stitches that you make should be sc, not dc. Follow the directions/illustrations from my site to help you.

Q5:I'm a beginner and I was wondering if you would tell me what does the double X X mean in the 15th round

A5:You can ignore the xx if you are making the standard sized hat. It was just notation for any extra stitches you added to make the hat bigger in the previous rounds. For example 80 + x number of stitches.

It sounds like you are doing

It sounds like you are doing it correctly. No reverse SC is necessary. I don't know why it is curling inwards, maybe your gauge is getting tighter?

hat curling in

Thanks for your quick response! the gauge is about the same all over 3-3.5 sc per inch using a J hook w/ Vanna's Choice from Lion Brand. weird.

hat curling up

Hi, I love your easy pattern. I've made lots of amigurumi's and this is my first hat, I had a hard time finding a hat pattern that incorporates the magic ring as they all want you to use the chain method which leaves a big hole. I'm at row 16 w/80 sts and am just crocheting in the round and the hat is curling up the wrong way(inward). I'm concerned that it won't go the other way when I'm done. I also noticed that other patterns have you do an reverse sc at the end for the edging. I'm crocheting this hat from right to left so is that correct?

Glad you like the pattern.

Glad you like the pattern. You don't join after each round. Just sc into the next st.

Skater Hat

Love the Skater Hat! The instructions do not state whether to join each round, or to continue the rounds (as in a spiral). Could you clarify, please? Thanks and happy crocheting!
