Hockey Puck Dude

I love playing hockey, and I hope my 14 month old son grows up to love it as well.  To get him started early, I designed this toy for him.   I don't know how to describe this one, other than it's a hockey puck with arms, legs, skates, stick, gloves, eyes, and helmet...I call him Hockey Puck Dude.

Materials

  • Worsted weight yarn (RH Super Saver works great)  in the following colors:
    •  Black (body)
    • Royal Blue (gloves, helmet) - any other color is fine too.
    • White (arms, legs, stick tape, laces)
    • Heather/Medium Grey (skates, chin strap)
    • Light Grey (skate blades)
    • Burnt orange (stick) - any other color is fine too, my stick is orange in real life so I picked it.
  • size E-4 (3.5mm | JPN 6/0) hook
  • Fiberfill stuffing
  • Yarn needle for sewing parts together
  • 2 pipe cleaners of any color (or 1 pipe cleaner & 1 stiffer item of similar shape & length -- for stick)
  • 2 wiggly eyes

Abbreviations

Ch = chain
Sc = single crochet
St(s) = stitch(es)

Gauge

Doesn't matter, it's also hard to measure on such a complex pattern.  If you crochet with the same tension throughout, you'll be ok.

Final Size

Approximately 9 inches tall, and 4 inches wide.

Instructions

Body (Left Side)

This is worked in a spiral.  Do not chain 1 after each round or you will gain extra stitches.

Round Directions Total (Sts)
1 Make an adjustable ring with 6 sc 6

12-15 Working in both loops again, sc in each st around.  Fasten off. after last round. 60

Body (Right Side)

Repeat Rounds 1 - 10 above.  Fasten off.

Sew left & right sides together, stuffing lightly as you go.  You want just enough stuffing to have the body maintain a cylinder shape, while not being too squishy.

Arm & Glove (Make 4)

This is worked from the top of the arm to the tip of the glove.  Each arm & glove piece is flat.
2 pieces are sewn together and lightly stuffed to make a complete arm & glove set.

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 Chain 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. 4
2-7 Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4
8 Glove Starts Here.  Change to blue yarn (or desired glove color).
Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.
4
9 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st. Ch 1, turn. 7
10 Chain 3, sc in each ch down.  Slip stitch in next st. (should be the 2nd st from the beginning).  Sc in next 5 sts across. Ch 1, turn. 5
11-12 Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. 5
13 Sc next 2 sts together, sc in next 3 sts. Ch 1, turn. 4
14 Sc next 2 sts together, Sc next 2 sts together.  Fasten off. 2

Sew 2 arm & glove pieces together to make 1 complete arm & glove, stuffing very lightly as you go.  When sewing, be sure to put stitches across the wrist (where the arm & glove meet) so that it makes the wrist area look flatter.

Repeat for the other 2 arm & glove pieces.

Skate Boot (Make 2)

This part can get pretty confusing without pictures, so please refer to the following diagram for the different parts of the skate as they are referred to in this pattern.

skate anatomy

The skate boot is made by making the outsole first (from heel to toe), then forming the lower boot sides as you go without fastening off.  Next, the toe cap is made, followed by a fasten off.  The Boot Back is next, and the tongue & laces are last.

The blade is made afterwards, and attached separately.

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 Chain 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc in each st across. 4
2 Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4
3 Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 5
4 Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in last st.  Ch 1, turn. 6
5-6 Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 6
7 2 sc in next st, sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 8

Boot sides start here.   Chain 1, turn.  Working in  Back Loop Only, sc in first st & each st around.  (This can be a little tough, but can be done.  Just make sure that you make an sc in each row end, so that you end up with 32 sts around.).

Do not chain 1 at the end of this round.  Just start the next row by making the first sc in the next st.

28
14-15 Working in both loops again, sc in each st around.  (Do not chain 1 at the end of the round) 28
16 Toe cap starts here.  Working in rows again.  Sc in next 2 sts.  Ch 1, turn. 2
17 2 sc in next st, 2 sc in last st.  Ch 1, turn. 4
18 2 sc in next st, Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in last st.  Ch 1, turn. 6
19-20 Sc in each st across. Fasten Off. 6

To fasten the toe cap, sew toe cap sides to skate sides to form a bootie shape.

Boot Back

Row Directions Total (Sts)

Sc in same stitch and sc in next 22 sts across.  Ch 1, turn

22
2 Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn 22
3 Sc next 2 sts together, 3 times. Repeat again twice more.  Sc in next 14 sts.  Sc next 2 sts together, 3 times. Ch 1, turn. 16
4-6 Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. Fasten off after row 6. 16

Boot Tongue

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 Chain 5, sc in 2nd chain from hook.  Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4
2-9 Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn.  Fasten off after last row. 4

Sew the tongue to the boot.  The top of the tongue should extend beyond the top of the boot.  Refer to the skate anatomy diagram above for placement.

Boot Laces

Take a long piece of white yarn (~1.5 ft.), and use it to lace up the boot like you would a real shoe.  The lace should go all the way to the top of the boot.  At the top of the boot, you can tie the lace like tying a shoelace.  Be sure to double knot it, and maybe sew a stitch to keep it from coming out.

Skate Blades (Make 2)

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 Chain 13, sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 12
2-5 Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 12
6

Fold into half, lengthwise.  Slip stitch in each st (both sides together) across.  Note: Slip stitch is done on outer-loop to outer-loop.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for joining.

12

To join the blade to the boot sole, use the long tail from row 6.  Align the blade (row 6 should be closest to the boot) in the center of the sole lengthwise.  Sew blade to sole.

Legs (Make 2)

Each leg is made flat, and then rolled & sewn to make a tube.  A pipe cleaner (doubled-up), is secured in each leg to make it bendable, and then the leg is attached to the skate.

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 Leaving long tail for joining, chain 10.  sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 9
2-11 Sc in each st across.  Ch 1, turn. Fasten off after last row.  9

Attaching the Leg to a Skate

Cut a pipe cleaner into 2 halves.  Fold each piece into half, and place lengthwise on a leg .  Secure it with some sewn stitches.  For each leg, sew leg edges (lengthwise) together to make a tube.   Stuff skate boot, leaving room to insert the leg.  The leg should fit perfectly into the boot.  Sew the leg to the boot in order to secure it, using boot color yarn.  Repeat for other leg & skate.

Attaching the Eyes, Arms, & Legs to the Body

Sew both legs to the underside of the body.  Sew arms to the center of the puck on either side.  Sew or Glue (depending on the type of wiggly eyes you are using) eyes to body edge.  Refer to diagram below for placement guide.

4 Sc in next 4 sts, Sc last 2 sts together.  Fasten off. 5

Assembling the Complete Stick

Sew slanted end of the blade to the shaft.  The blade should be pointed slightly down, and the end should extend a little beyond the shaft.  Refer to diagram above for placement.

Stick Tape

Wrap a strand of white yarn around the blade, being careful to not let the stick color come through.  Secure the "tape" with a couple of rows of (white) stitches sewn oon.

Next, sew the stick to the gloves.

Helmet

Helmet is worked in a spiral.

Round Directions Total (Sts)
1 Make an adjustable ring with 8 sc in the center. 8
2 2 sc in each st around. 16
3 1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st.  Repeat around. 24

3 Sc next 2 sts together,  Sc next 2 sts together. Fasten off.
Sc in next 4 sts, Sc last 2 sts together.  Fasten off.   Repeat Ear Flap instructions for other side also
2

Chin Strap

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 With dark gray yarn, join to tip of an ear flap.  Ch 25.  Attach to end of the other ear flap with a slip stitch. 25

Front Helmet Ridge

This provides a raised edge to the front of the helmet, which makes it slightly more 3D.

Row Directions Total (Sts)
1 With same color yarn as helmet, Chain 25.  Sc in 2nd ch from hook.  Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 24
2-3 Sc in each st across.  Fasten off after last row. 24

Sew front ridge to the front of the helmet, aligning it with the bottom of the helment.  The ridge should wrap all the way around (evenly), stopping around where the helment back starts.

Attaching Helmet to Body

Position helmet on the head, so that the ear flaps are above the center of the puck (where the arms are attached).
